The Portrait of the Future Employer – What Tendencies Does the Labor Market Dictate?

When it comes to the future of the labor market, it is important to understand how the employer should look and present itself in the future to win over potential employees. Today we are asking Stafferty Baltics General Manager Aušra Bendikaitė about what kind of trends the labor market dictates, and how employers should appear to potential employees in the future.

Can you give your insights on how the labor market in the Baltic States looked in 2022?

“Well, the labor market is constantly changing, and all these changes can no longer be called news, but a new normal. Such phenomenon as remote work will become or already is not an advantage, but a hygienic factor that helps the employer to compete in the labor market, which currently fully serves the employee or candidate.”

So what should the employer of the future be like, in your opinion?

“The competition for employees will be won by the employer who will offer remote work and flexible work schedule as standard, a huge advantage if the employer allows working from anywhere in the world. We should also not forget to talk about the employer that will not be afraid of employee turnover and will make decisions related to new employees quickly, also the employer should be ready to train new employees. Lastly, the future employer should not fear a limited level of employee qualification, that is the employer will not require the employee to know everything and be responsible for multiple things at work. The employer will adapt the structure of the organization in such a way that a multi-qualified employee is not needed for every task, but a specialist who knows one or two functions is more than enough.”

Should the employer emphasize the importance of the recruitment process?

“Yes, in all this context, the recruitment process is very important. Primarily, employee turnover is increasing every year. I want to highlight that the recruitment process is now prolonged due to a simple lack of staff. Existing employers do not let employees go, and the selection of employees has shifted to headhunting, which means that negotiations must be conducted, and the selection has to be made by choosing from candidates who are not particularly motivated to change their jobs. As a result, a very large percentage of candidates refuse to accept job offers.”

Is there a way for the employer to prevent the shortage of employees in the company?

“I believe that the employer should begin with the improvement of the selection process, this is a huge step forward in solving the employee shortage problem. Also, employers should not be afraid of employees who do not have experience, especially when they show the motivation to gain new skills during the selection process. In that case, the employer should not lack the courage to train new employees.”

Lastly, can you share any advice for employers on how to improve the employee selection process?

“Of course! The employer should describe the employee’s duties very clearly. Shortening the list of requirements for the candidate to a maximum of 3 criteria might also be helpful. Put more effort into the preparation for the job interviews and interview one candidate once. It is very important to not lose the candidate's attention, so make quick decisions, whether the same day or the next one. Assess your organization's ability to carry out the selection process objectively and, if necessary, use the services of a professional selection agency.”
